Coffee Cup Diner

MLive did an article on the best diners in each Michigan county a couple weeks ago. I saved the article and told myself I needed to try some of those places, since I can honestly say I have never been in any of them.

We started with the Coffee Cup Diner in Hillsdale. It is a cute little diner, but it is drafty, has low ceilings and NO BATHROOM. I'm not sure how that works, because I thought if a place served food, it was required to have a bathroom, but I must be wrong.

The breakfast menu takes up one side of the menu, which is great for me, because diner breakfasts are my favorite. The other side of the menu is typical soups, sandwiches and burgers, but there is also a Thai food section that completely surprised me. You can also read the history of the restaurant here, which might explain why it is so cold.

I started with hot cocoa. There are no specialty coffees and I am a coffee snob, so cocoa seemed like my best option. I'm pretty sure they make it with milk, because it was thick and rich. I also love their personalized cups. I honestly would have bought one as a souvenir if they sold them.

This was breakfast. It's called The Mess. It is not an omelet, even though it is listed in the same space as the omelets. It is fried potatoes with onions, green peppers and ham, covered with a peppery cream gravy that is to die for. The meal was so filling, I took half of mine home and ate it for dinner at work.

I would recommend going to the Coffee Cup Diner for takeout any day. The food was wonderful and the portion size was well worth the money. Plus I need to go back and try the Thai food for lunch one day.

Unfortunately, I don't think I would eat in again. Everyone in the restaurant was wearing their coats, because it was so cold. Seating was also cramped, so I couldn't bring my full family of 8 and expect us to be able to sit together. And of course the lack of bathroom is a huge deterrent.

If you go, tell me about your experience. And let me know if there is a different Diner that should have been listed in the article.

Happy eating.
Kristie
