Deer Camp: Somerset Beach Campground
My husband got a 4-point buck during bow season a couple weeks ago. That's a good thing, because he has been hunting sporadically these past 2 weeks. He missed opening day of firearm season, because we were at my brother's funeral. He has stayed home with me more days than I have counted, to make sure I am okay, and not too sad.
I do my camping in a camper with a furnace, stove and bathroom now a days. I love it, but this set up wouldn't be too bad if I had to tent camp. Notice the smoke coming out the stack at the top. The hunters on this site had a deer hanging in the tree next to the tent. I love that this campground is so supportive of hunters. They even do a practice weekend before bow season with archery contests.
The day was gloomy and dreary and matched my mood perfectly. Normally I battle the Michigan gray season. I battle it with flowers on the tables, and special light bulbs. Right now I appreciate that the weather is sad with me, like the universe is mourning my loss with me.
I needed to get out of the house and stop sitting around crying. I decided to wander the campground and let the cold air clear my head. Somerset Beach Campground, in Jerome, Michigan is a good place to do that. This time of year there are not a ton of people camping, but the wind blowing off the lake, the smell of campfires and quiet of the area make it a good place to clear my head.

My google maps list the lake at this campground as Blood Lake. I'm not sure why it is called that, but I love watching the animals out here. I was lucky enough to catch this picture of geese hanging out in one of the spots that haven't frozen yet. We may have to see how ice fishing is on this lake next month.
And at the end of the day, sometimes you just need to pray. I love this picture of the chapel with the snow falling down. Big churches with stained glass are beautiful, but there is something equally amazing about a simple chapel in the woods. It's like you are closer to God, when you pray out in nature.
Where are your favorite places to go for deer camp? Do you find the experience awe inspiring and a time when you are closer to God? Please share your pictures and stories.
